What's the deal with CLAMP stuff? Is it worth reading? I've tried it a few times, but that was years back, and I'm thinking about getting into it again. Where do I start? What order makes the multiverse actually make sense? Do you have to grind your way through a bunch of boring, cliche shit to get to the interesting crossover stuff?

I love the idea of a self-insert boy getting dommed by a sexy older witch, but I've read that XXXholic is much better if you've read the other shit first.

Production Order.

Is ALL of it worthwhile and necessary?

Watanuki is too eccentric for a self-insert, but he still gets dommed more or less, in a good way.

If you want to read xxxHolic you might want to read Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle alongside with it.
Though the whole multiverse things is a goddamn mess, and it ends up becoming so convoluted than no even the authors could keep track of what was going on anymore.

Tsuabasa and Holic are top tier.
Tsubasa first, though I think it's intended you read them simultaneously.

Also Gate 7 is great, but it's abandoned?

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the multiverse. It's kind of tacked on, and for the most works don't overlap.
Tsubasa is the series with travel between universes; facilitated by by the witch in xxxHolic. Chobits/CCS/whatever are fairly irrelevant to the Tsubasa story besides the fact that those worlds exist.

No and No.

I just really like xxxHolic, got a good aesthetic and supernatural shit like that is my jam. Def need to prime yourself on Tsubasa but the anime of xxxHolic is a fun standalone

I watched like 3 episodes and dropped it, does it get much better?

I'd say so, definitely not like a best show ever or anything but it's a personal favorite because I'm nostalgic for the 2009 era of the Funimation channel so what can I say

CCS, MKR, xxxHolic, and TRC are good.

Angelic Layer is good, I dont remember enough of tsubasa to give a value judgement

CLAMP went through a phase where it seemed like they intentionally shit all over all their IPs due to IP disputes with publisher.
have they even been active the last few years? last thing I member was tsubasa chronicle.

I wouldn't put too much thought into the idea of a multiverse. It really doesn't come up that often from what I've seen. Also I fucking love Rayearth.

I'm reading Tsubasa and Holic right now, I'm reading them concurrently according to some order I found on the net, I think it's release order, even the TL notes in official releases reccomend reading them both.
Tsubasa has references to many other works, but it's usually just alternative versions of characters in different settings so it's not necessary to read them.
I'd say read Cardcaptor Sakura, this one is heavily referenced and actually gives some additional insight instead of characters simply being reused.

I remember reading the idea that the clamp ladies just really like the idea of reincarnation and destiny and all that jazz

their alt versions in tsubasa get married

Hurray!

xxxHolic is particulary based, never spoon feeding the readers about the ending.
I also like Tokyo Babylon a lot, but the art is not that good and the scans available are 2000's """"quality"""". I guess it has charm that way, but still.

It's actually a but surprising how hard it is to find decent quality scans or even rips of the anime. Trying to find X either leads me to softsub AVIs or fucking OGM files

god, those scans
but I liked those TL notes about sei-chan being hot, subaru being cute hokuto being moe

And a lot of these are still stuck with Tokyopop as their only official release. If they got one at all. Sakura and Rayearth got some nice newer releases though.

viz has digita releases of bunch of their older stuff, I think they have everything starting from Man of Many faces up to Wish minus Tokyo Babylon, going by release order

watanuki is not a self insert
he's a screechy, annoying, brat in the beginning who is literally a simp for himawari.
Yuuko tries to set him straight by telling him that she'll bring him a lot of misfortune to his life and doumeki will be a better friend for him.

what the hell happened to xxxholic did they stop the manga?

What was wrong with Himawari? I mean aside from totally not being into him but she didn't seem like a bad person

To be fair he does

xxxhiatus

she was literally a walking heap of misfortune, she touched watanuki and he flew out of the window and almost died

It's Japanese mysticism, I ain't gotta explain shit.

X is on permanent never gonna get finished too

Same. Quite the trip down the memory lane lol.

Yeah, sometimes you forget how far we've come and then BAMMO some ancient ass encode. I remember I used to watch Escaflowne on RMV files.
