Anime that does not utilize high amount of detail the current age provides with high res videos (also not anime is by default made hires, but more and more) is loosing out. Even with simplistic artsy backgrounds, if you spare on details - its only laziness and not choice.
Asking if such styles are overrated is like asking is Flac overrated compared to Magnet tapes
