What went wrong?

The quality drop was exponential

Azami, and then another major drop with Asahi.

Raised the stakes way beyond what was necessary

I don't like thinking about this series anymore, every time I do I get really pissed off at how it went to complete utter shit when it started off comfy and good, Prison School has the same effect on me too.

Season 5 was unnecessary

Bad arc + Time skip

does it get worse after saiba asahi?

You mean the quality drop of the anime or the story?

Why did the author suddenly decided to take inspiration from cooking master boy in the final arc?

This. It should have ended on season 4.

He's the final antagonist, and the series ends after that so no.

later seasons were ass.

Seemed fun and goofy, then started taking itself too seriously?

Ill always insist that s1 is an all time great shonen season
It does everything right, both in terms of story and in adaptation, and though a bit generic, its spin on battles is enough to make it something truly special

S2 kinda sucks though (7/10)
Didnt even watch past ep 2 of s3

DARK
CHEFS

I just want to know who on earth greenlit the later shit? Was it an editor? Wtf happened?

The second they mentioned a group of "underground chefs that only shady people and criminal organizations hires" being the villains, I cringed hard and couldn't finish the episode.

Should have stopped after S2, S1 was fucking amazing.

I read something in an old thread about how there was a cooking consultant working on the series but then she went on maternity leave and everything went to shit.

Erina and her side of the family. Any other girl is literally better than her

I remember one user told me during a thread of season 3(?) to look for panning shots of stills with mouth flaps and I shit you not 90% of all of the episodes were panning shots over stills with mouth flaps. Season 1 was movie level quality in comparison.

Yeah, Same here.

It kills me every time I think about it. It was like the author had suddenly forgotten what was great in his manga.

El hermano entered

Elite ten at least had some interesting characters and they weren't one singular block of baddies.
It's like they reheated the already questionable central arc with the next Erina parent and completely unsalvageable "Dark chefs"

The gifting

Everything to do with Asahi was totally unnecessary. Souma/Erina had already accepted each other by the end of the Azami arc and they could have easily done a timeskip where Souma cooks a meal for Erina, she says its delicious, he does the line and everyone goes home happy.

Exactly. Honestly, everyone actually getting stripped was probably the best way to end it. I still remember the excitement behind it and Erina stealing Soma's catchphrase. Would've been perfect.

This. and it was too fast too.
Like we went from just 'We gotta win to show we're not just some plucky upstarts with attitude!' to 'ENTIRE CUISINE INDUSTRY IS BEING THREATENED BY A MAN WITH GAY ONEITIS'

Where the fuck was there left to go after Yukihira became the number 1 seat, all interpersonal conflict with Erina was resolved and the fucking peanut butter squid was the final gourmet dish. Seriously why go further? What was there left to prove

when the erina focus started

I think Prison School leaves a worse taste because of how many fags here thought the ending was good simply because Chiyo didn't win.
