I'm in the middle of the second season and it's good; but I feel like the story is getting a little ridiculous with the whole Land of Asura part. The previous parts to me seem more connected and had a solid story.

He's a great character, what are you on about? In a place filled with batshit insane people achieving incomprehensible feets, he had only himself, his normal human abilities and all the complexes a broken man would carry with him. He literally wears a mask to let his ego loose, he's s easily one of the most well-written villains. Personally, I also find it fitting for him to be one with some of the most edgy and blatantly "evil" deeds. Flexing on children fits him better than Souther and frequently relying on weapons makes sence, just like than one guy with the dynamite.
