I've had the VNs sitting on my harddrive for a while. Heard someone saying it was a good take on nationalism, that got me curious. I'd love it if someone could give me a spit take on how it handles the issue. I've never read a VN before, so I am a little reluctant to commit to dumping a hundred hours into one. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the schwerchermarken anime, but couldn't stand total eclipse. I doubt either of them did the series justice, given how manga and novel adaptations usually go, so I'd prefer to hear it from someone who's actually familiar with the material.

Nationalism doesn't really get addressed much besides in one side-plot. It's been a while since I read it and I only read the FanTL so I can't comment on how well it was handled.

All the spinoffs suck because the only thing they share with the main series is the setting. The setting is neat and all, but Muv-Luv is wholly about the main character and the story around him. Everything else is just generic mecha stories.

Fair enough. It's just like crack in the 90's, everyone was doing it, but for the life of me I cannot find a fair take on it so pardon me if I'm focusing too much on a side issue. I mean, I don't want to say that's what it's all about when I haven't even read the damn thing.

It mostly just evaluates how effective nationalism is as a personal value during times of crisis. Most of the main characters are UN personnel so you meet a lot of people with different national allegiances and backgrounds. One of the earlier story arcs in Alternative is about how competing nationalisms cause and alleviate conflict during a crisis, and characters with very different views on what the value of nationalism have to reconcile their ideas with each other to succeed.

There are also a lot of nippon banzai yamato damashi samurai honorabu characters if that's your thing.

Since it is, at its heart soulless, it can only operate at the level of sensuality (violence and sexuality.) Ironically, since it is a corporatized and intellectually bankrupt form of entertainment, it cannot even momentarily leave the confines of its own unimaginative roots and thus it fails even to titillate, never making anything really libidinal or thrilling though that's all it will ever be good for.

As a result Re:zero gracefully transcends it. Its discursive approach never leaves its foot stuck in the mud of convention. Because of this honest ethic of simply going from the heart, Nagatsuki Tappei subconsciously imparts a greater emotional resonance than anything that could be consciously affected. Not only this, it revives the wonder of childhood as you discover along with the creator "the things more important than what you want.". Yes, one can hope that Re:zero is the future for anime. But as we see again and again, with its new iteration of the latest tired boy hero and his verminous harem we have a long long way to go.
