To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand EH romance. The foreshadowing is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Hegel's Aestetics most of the signs will go over a typical reader's head. There's also Eren's nationalistic outlook, which is definitly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these characters, to realise that they're not just cute couple - they represent something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike EH romance truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the passion in Historia's proposal "What would you think about me having a child?," which itself is a cryptic reference to Tolsoy's Russian epic War and Peace. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hajime Isayama's genius wit unfolds itself on their monitors. What fools.. how I pity them.
