>self-insert
What does this word even mean? Of course I'm gonna put myself on the character's shoes. If people didn't then no one would be emotionally engaged with fiction. Why do you guys pretend you're just bored observers? That's fucking retarded

>If people didn't then no one would be emotionally engaged with fiction
The fact you think this is why you're a complete brainlet.
You don't need to literally self-insert to feel empathy
You can like a MC or just any character without them needing to be self insertable. In general I see the term as more of an insult, making a character (typically an MC) as bland as fucking possible without uniqueness quirks or anything so that viewers can easily fill their shoes
based.
>rinfag is a retard
You can't make this up
Faggots use self-insert as a bullshit excuse to defend cuck protagonists, there's literally nothing wrong in pretending to be a chad MC
why does a bland character means they're more susceptible to self-inserting? who decides that? that's fucking retarded logic. I find myself self-inserting more with well-written characters.
>Of course I'm gonna put myself on the character's shoes. If people didn't then no one would be emotionally engaged with fiction.
This is literally the mark of a psychopath, user.
normalfags don't like the word selfinsert because it implies escaspism which is exactly what anime is but they avoid this reality by convincing themselves anime can be deep and profound and totally not a waste of their time because they don't actually care about anime and just want to watch it to fit in with nerd cliques on social media platforms
>why does a bland character means they're more susceptible to self-inserting?
Because it's easier to imagine yourself in the story if the character doesn't already have a personality to conflict with yours.
>here's literally nothing wrong in pretending to be a chad MC
Self insert MCs are betas not chads
Ever seen some dumbass claim an anime has shit writing because of an argument that boils down to "the character didn't do what I would have done"? Now you're on your first step to understanding.
OP and people in this thread are really confusing "self-insert" and "empathizing".
Ah, so this is the reason ntr is so popular. It's made for your kind.
No it's not. That's a moronic meme propagated by
shitty plebbit immigrants. It's much more satisfying to self-insert as a mysterious complex character.
>why does a bland character means they're more susceptible to self-inserting?
A good example of this (though from outside anime) is Master Chief from Halo. He was specifically created to have no personality, face, or voice to be easy for the player to insert themselves into the game:
>Bungie's Frank O'Connor has described the Chief as "so quiet and so invisible, literally, that the player gets to pretend they're the Chief. The player gets to inhabit those shoes [and] apply their own personality."
>trying to appreciate art is for normalfags
>TRUE ANIME FANS LIKE MYSELF know the entire medium is trash
See You fail again, user.
>It's much more satisfying to self-insert as a mysterious complex characte
This is not what "self-insert" means, moron.
No
You massive fucking retard
What people mrsn by self insert is when a character is the author, not the reader. It isn't necessarily bad in all ocassions (Like with Rohan being a cool character) but extremely fucking often its a mary sue who is written for the author solely to masturbate over
It comes from insecurity. There are some people who can't just say they honestly enjoy something on its own terms, they have to pretend to have an ironic or "LOL THIS IS SO DUMB RITE GUYS" distance to protect themselves.
Pretty much what said, which is also part of the reason we have "salaryman endings"
The japanese people did, the less characteristics a character has the more easily people can say "hey, he's just like me". A character is usually called a self insert if he lacks qualities for the sake of beinf appealing to broader audience (see: gacha game protagonists)
>What people mrsn by self insert is when a character is the author, not the reader
How can you say something so incorrect with such self-confidence?
You can empathize with and understand a character without thinking of them as essentially you in a different context.
Because it means there are no pesky personality traits or quirks to break the illusion that said bland MC is "literally me".
No you fucking retard people just refer that to author insert , when people say self insert they generally mean an MC meant for the audience to insert themselves into
No, that user is right. People use "self-insert" in two different ways, generally: (1) a character that's basically just the author, and (2) a character with little-to-no personality or traits created for the viewer/reader to step into.
yes
You nailed it on the head OP.
Zig Forumsedditors pretend it's a bad thing because they have the mental aptitude of a cockroach.
LOL ANIME IS LE TRASH BROS XD DO I FIT IN YET!?!?!
Yes, and the latter is very much the most common use of the term.
Usually if it's an author self-insert, it's specified that way. Self-insert on its own just means your average bland black-haired manlet MC.
When the new LL anime makes female self-inserts in anime for guys the next big thing, how are we going to distinguish between the girl they're supposed to self-insert as and the other cute girls in the show?
mangaka self inserts >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> reader self inserts
Is there much difference? Most mangaka are just as much sad losers as their otaku audience. Sitting in a room drawing mangoo 30 hours a day for 10 years doesn't leave you with much of a life.
Self inserts are usually otaku bait for lazy viewers who don't care or can't recognise the character's flaws and unoriginal mediocrity, and project all sorts of none-existent qualities unto them. It's really not hard to recognise. Don't care whether inserts are right or wrong, good or bad.
It's a bit worrying that some Zig Forumsnons can't seem to emotionally connect with a character unless that character is exactly like them.
>comparing games where you have choices and free will to anime
sorry, but I don't self insert as dull uninteresting losers, especially when anime is treated as an escapade from real life.
>especially when anime is treated as an escapade from real life.
As opposed to vidya? Do you even think before you reply?

It's almost like they lack the ability to empathize with and imagine the thoughts and feelings of others.
The issue here is that Zig Forums tends to use the term self-insert as a synonym for audience cipher.
Self-inserting, imagining yourself in the character's place, is how the vast majority of people engage with media. They find a character like them and latch on to it. Normally, this is because the character has some timeless or relatable trait the audience feels kinship with. With anime and manga, it's usually because the character has the trappings of the target audience.
With an audience cipher, the character becomes purely an avatar for the audience. They do not exist to have any other function but to be the method the audience engages with the work in. It grants the greatest emotional feedback for the work's audience, but leaves nothing for outside observers to latch on to.
The former done poorly and the latter in general are seen as lazy writing. More damningly, they remove the illusion that most of the things Zig Forums consumes are naked masturbatory fantasies. Zig Forums gets mad about certain types because nobody wants to see another person's kinks.
If you look at literature over a vast period of time, a lot of it doesn't deal with characters substantially different from the target audience.
Playing to the cheap seats has always been a thing.
