Because it's just that. Symbolism. Most of it is general common knowledge in Japanese culture. That's why it's effective: People see it and associate things with it. That's as deep as it goes.
Again, look at Christian symbolism. If an author invokes the Adam and Eve myth, that doesn't make it deep. It's just a connection the reader is supposed to make on the very surface level.
