This here is the spread I've made reference to a few times. It pretty much tells us all the characters who will return during it. As of the latest released chapter (28), we've seen the return of obviously Kenshin, Kaoru, Kenji, Yahiko, Tsubame, Ashitaro, Aran and Asai, but also Sano, Saito, Cho, Kamatari, Hennya, Anji, Soujiro, Eiji and Kanryu, while Megumi, Hiko, Aoshi, Misao, and Enishi have been mentioned or shown without actually joining the story. That only leaves Elder, Raijuta, Fuji, and the Jinchuu crew unaccounted for.
Not in the picture, but also returning, we've had Yutaro, Okina, Sae (or was it Tae?) Sano's little brother, and the police officer who helped Yahiko against Kujiranami, and possibly some other minor characters I forgot about.
Japan is notably draconian about drug shit, yet not so much about CP, which is bizarre to us westerners. An actor got pretty much memory-holed recently (even got patched out of the Yakuza games) for having coke. And I've heard it might have even been a set up and he didn't actually have it.
Aoshi is credited for The Final, but since Gein was already in the first movie, I don't know what Aoshi's role will be in it. I just hope this doesn't lead to more delays, or worse.

6 months from the epilogues, I think. I guess Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu not only has the secret of eternal youth, it also makes your hair grow super fast. And maybe your nails.
I hadn't noticed, but you're right. Ashitaro does look a lot like Gintoki, just with other colors.
