I lived in Japan as a kid and watched anime on TV there apparently. And I just continued doing it when we moved back to the US. I got into manga pretty early too, buying American Shonen Jump at elementary school book fairs. It's more that it's something I've always done than any other specific reason. I'd be interested in what others have to say that got into it later in life.

>Lived in Japan as a kid
>Moved back to US
I'm so sorry

for a while i stayed away because i always heard that anime was for loser outcasts, then i became one so i figured why not check it out. thats why i started, i stayed because at this point i feel committed to jap culture and jokes

Because I can't stand youtube and western tv shows which I passed time with in the past.
Also because watching it takes my mind off of reality.

I used to be one of those weebs that kept saying they wanted to move to Japan but I got over that at some point. Would be cool to go back at some point though. I don't really have very many memories from it as I was too young.

>weird loner in middle school who found Zig Forums

chinese doodles are my only escape
thanks for reading my blog

anime makes me happy, western tv does not.

I don't remember anymore. The only thing that still holds my interest is Shamiko's second season.

I want to escape reality and I still do to this day.

>father was in burgermilitary
>whole family moved there with him
>grew up watching manga and reading anime
>went to small mom and pop restaurants every weekend with mom dad and brothers
>waiting areas had manga in some of them
>others just had little book shelves filled with manga
>had after school math program that had a library full of manga
>read some when i got through my math booklets sensei would give me
it was great.
it was perfect.
it was fun.

>unfunny
Stupid redditor.

I don't. It's fucking terrible, all of it. I don't even know why I'm here

Mom loves lolis so I guess it's just her influence

How were you able to succeed user?

Weekday cartoon show used to air Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, Zoids, and Digimon. Never had a fucking chance.

Then foreign channel used to air 'mature' anime like Evangelion and Bubblegum Crisis on Saturday nights and I got sucked in by the designs.

I just like fantastical stories. Western media and books in general are either too shallow or too focused on "realism".

>answering to bait threads

American TV is garbage.
I rather live in a delusional fantasy full of wide eyed 2D characters than burning my brain cells with Western cancer.

being the lone stubborn weirdo who picks the right hill to die on can make you money
I wouldn't recommend it for everyone
it's almost all luck
I'm not even that successful compared to other lone stubborn weirdos who picked the right hill to die on

Your dad wouldn't happen to still be in the picture, would he?
Actually, don't answer that - I'm going to fuck her anyway.

Raised on it since birth.
60s Astro Boy was one of the first ones.
People who discover anime after 13 are more often than not the scourge of the Earth.

what do you do and how did you get to point?

what bait thread?

>grow up with pokemon
>always want to watch, never get to watch it
>find kirby and ragnarok anime when I was 11, watch it when you could still find anime on Youtube
>anime gets deleted off Youtube, forget about it since I don't know where to get it
>fast forward a few years, in college
>see Nichijou clips, decide to watch it
>get sucked back in
Here I am now

When I was younger and was watching I had thought the kinds of stories depicted in anime were always either too "mature" (Bebop, Death Note, DBZ, etc.) for usual American cartoons to ever cover, and if the stories were to be made in some medium in English it would likely be live action with shitty late 90s TV CGI to ever look good. It just had to be animated to look good and the only animated English shows only had kids or very light subjects depicted.

So really I wanted mature shows for mature people such as myself - but still cartoons

>what does a weird loner do to get money
I work at a tech start up
>how do you get lots of money
I joined the right tech start up and never folded

when I was 9 I asked my dad what anime was an he said they were Japanese cartoons, I looked up anime and found fma and thought "these make me feel nice, I want to watch more" and now years later I'm still doing this shit.

I think the most interesting part of my whole experience is that no one ever got me into it, it was pretty much just me the whole way, I didn't even meet someone else who like anime until I was a sophomore in highschool, and even then I was the only one who had watched as many anime as I had at the time, until I came to Zig Forums of course.

what fucking books do i gotta read to get into tech? college isn't an option because i have an old mother and a sick, special needs brother that depend on me...

I don't like anime.

>that youtube design
Damn, it feels like it was very long ago

in 2013 a friend recommended kill la kill to me, and ive been hooked on anime ever since. my next watches were death note, trigun, and gurren lagann

Learn how to program. Most people can't as it's not as easy as it sounds.
Or become a (web) designer. Our company is really looking for them right now.

I'm a toonami baby

I used to be in a spanish videogame forum where everyone had Lucky Star and Haruhi avatars. I thought those girls were really cute so I got into anime purely so I could get more of them.
I was basically a naturally born moebuta.

I mean, what else are you supposed to do? Anime might be shit but is still better than the alternatives, out of the hundreds of TV shows that come out every year only a couple are not offensively bad and MAYBE 1 is good, out of the hundreds anime show that come out every year there's tons of fine shows and you are always guarateed a couple of good ones for the least. Anime is just the superior media.

Because I'm so goddamn done with western shows that constantly revolve around cops or criminals or shit that's just as uninteresting.

Started with things like Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball like anyone my age, continued watching anime on TV until the day schoolmates taught me about some fansites with Naruto and One Piece fansubs. We would trade episodes on CDs and usb of random anime we found. Then I eventually discovered Zig Forums.

I read manga

My mother used to watch dbz and pokemon when she was pregnant with me. She would make me watch mainstream anime on tv while she was doing home chores.
I've literally been watching anime since before i was born.
