nah, the finger nails got focus because they represent a human function that can't be suppressed. he even has direct exposition about it in a scene. the idea is just that kira needs to kill the same way his fingernails need to grow, and he couldnt stop even if he wanted to.

I'm fairly sure Hayato was keeping watch on his dad before Kira took his place. He was a weird kid and his dad a bit of a deadbeat. In a weird and creepy way he was trying to understand his father better and eventually noticed weird things like him practicing signatures, irregular behaviour and habits out of nowhere etc.

Hayato literally figures out what Stray Cat does in the first encounter when he is pinned by air and pierces it with a compass to free himself. Its not like he understood everything about stands and gained one himself or anything.

Blame the anime, in the manga those events happen in fractions of a second.

The anime has to make those moments longer to accomodate dialogue.

i have a theory that in the JoJo's anime, speaking and thinking literally do not take any time to do and it tracks consistently throughout
