I know thoughts on his manga are questionable, but Mashima is serious underrated for his work ethic. I also find it weird he's never brought up that much when it comes to having consistent success in manga. The guy has done THREE long-running shounen manga that were/are all successful. There aren't a lot of mangaka these days who can say that

It was doing fine right before the anime got announced but it's gone down in the last months. I think Covid and also very little marketing has been detrimental. We will see once the anime airs, I think it will do fine so long as the adaptation isn't a complete failure. It follows the usual template Mashima story but fixes a lot of the issues with Fairy Tail. Primarily, having a focus on a much smaller cast. For what it's worth, I have enjoyed reading it more than Fairy Tail. It is closer to Rave Master.

that's not true at all.
S8 was subpar for shonen jump standards.
Being Kishimotos work automatically made it more popular than most series that hardly break 30k.
S8 became unsustainable because Kishi is a top paid mangaka. If samurai 8 was made by a literalwho it could have easily have gone for years.

I stand-by on Mashima being a hack, but he's a based hack.

If they'd just been low key about Samurai 8 like Rin-Ne or Mao instead of trying to hype it up into an instant megahit based on nothing it would probably have cobbled together enough audience by now to be top 6-7 in 2020 shit jump and eventually get a Toei anime.
Trying to manufacture a hit from that shit with a substitute artist was beyond hubris.
