He wasn't. Genthru showed how outclassed Gon was against a Nen user with more experience. Genthru also did nothing wrong in Greed Island, he was just another player going along with the games rules. Genthru was based. Mark my words, he will be back in the future.

Honestly Ging not being a terrible person fixes most of the series problems.

If he didn't care, he'd just rinse and repeat the same story every arc like other series. It takes more effort to come up with a new story & setting every arc.

Tonpa is a good guy for helping filter out all the morons from being hunters.

Hisoka wasn't in the CA arc despite being in every other arc in the story because he would've killed Meruem by himself.

He may have saved a decent amount of lives by spiking those drinks, some of them would've for sure jobbed in the upcoming tests which were considerably more deadly. Truly a nuanced character..

Can't always have super duper cool, charismatic and seemingly unbeatable villains that need asspulling for the MC to defeat them. A less sparkly antagonistic is a good change of pace and a more realistic story, strong but approachable with info gathering, preparations and planning, without the need for OP red eyes, unbreakable bullshit chains that force Zetsu or power ups that make you age 30 years in an instant

Considering the track record of HxH characters, Tonpa has probably saved more people then anyone else in this series.
