The season basically ends by finishing the backstory that establishes what would be the central conflict of the series, the entire premise being an adaption of not only Sakaguchi Ango's short stories but also his essays concerning post-war Japan. It actually appears to be a refutation of his assertion that Japan had become more decadent, but also more truthful by showing that the shadowy extra-governmental forces that manipulate societies into war continue unchallenged in the post-war era even when it seems major shifts have occurred. The season builds this up in the characters of Shinjuurou and Rinroku, but ends right at the point where their ideals will come to clash.
