Are Death Note characters smartly written ?
Justin King
Aaron Russell
Somewhat (especially for L, less so for Near and Chocolate nigger) While the dialogue scenes are usually very lively and exciting (smartly written), the "deductions" sections are frequently based on nonsense situations and ass-pulls. Watching L and Light have conversation fights was great, but expecting L to connect the first murder to Kira or having Near figure everything out in 5 minutes was dumb.

According to Zig Forums every smart character is written by a dumb author. Why? Because whenever a smart character acts in a way the viewer couldn't predict people tend to call it bullshit and unrealistic so that they don't see themselves as the dumb ones.

I liked L the rest were meh imo
Luis Reed
Ryan Hughes
No but they're fun
Jaxson Adams
What's wrong with the Naruto guy? I thought he was written just fine. Granted some dumb tropes like hanging around playing chess, but he seemed legitimately intelligent.
Hunter Ross
This post would've perfectly captured the entire premise of this thread if not for Conan being the highest tier instead of the middle one.
Nicholas Rogers
Any specific examples?

Lelouch felt more genuine than Light to me.
The rest is decent though I though meruem wasn't really written to be smart 4-d chess type of charachter. Just because he liked playing shogi doesnt mean his intelligence was a defining trait.
Charles Harris
The whole code guess is written like shit.

not that user, and i do not know if he enjoyed it or not, but plot was clusterfuck, very badly written, but highly entertaining.
Dominic Turner
Light and L are written in a fairly smart way. There's very little contrivance to the things they pull off which is why the L vs Light part of Death Note is the most compelling part of the manga and regarded as top tier storytelling. Mello and Near just by existing feel contrived and stupid, and the way they just pick up the investigation from where L left off without doing any of the hard work L did to establish the facts just makes them look even more contrived.
Jack Collins
true i had to drop usogui cause i couldnt empasize with the characters where intelligence == how much the authors let´s you get away bith BS

I disagree. Their were undoubtedly some unfortunate plotholes. In this thread we're discussing smartly written chatacters. I feel like Lelouch was smartly written. He despised the king and refused to use Geass to deceive people opting instead to create an alter-ego and an elaborate plan to usurp the throne and protect his loved ones. His motivation was better than Lights and when he faltered it was easy to relate with the reasons why. I haven't seen it in a long time admittedly but I remember vividly how well it scratched the itch that I felt at the beginning of Death Note, maybe comparing to Death Note(not a huge fan) lead me to be overly enamored with it. I feel like on the subject of this particular thread that my point still stands. Plot issues aside they pulled off the smart puppet-master trope better with Lelouch than is typical IMO. I feel like only Liar Game and Monster pull this off MORE succesfully.

>Lelouch felt more genuine than Light to me.
How? Lelouch's entire personality is "I'm good at chess and can literally predict everything people will do because I'm smart and play chess." His thought processes are never examined, his logical inferences are never articulated. We never see him think through a problem the way Light does. We just get the problem, then see Lelouch thinking, then he magically solves it because he predicted everything in advance.

>create links thanks to concrete hints to solve the case
>BO mindgames are fucking great
Don't see what's the problem here

But that's what would happen in real life. It wouldn't be autistic orphans but it would be intelligence agencies that would serve the role of Near and Mello using the shit that L left out.
Kayden Thompson
The entire point of Code Geass was bombastic reveals of Lelouch's plot with the music swelling and Lelouch's VA's explanation rising in intensity. It's dramatic and built to be so, because Lelouch has a flair for the dramatic. Sometimes they do show the preparation, subtly so, or foreshadow it. He is absolutely a genius that is extremely good at politics and predicting other people's actions.
Nolan Baker
are you retarded?
Nicholas Collins
One example is when he declares himself as Zero. Another example is on the island when he has everyone don Zero masks. The entire point is that they were already caught in Lelouch's web.
Owen Williams
I hate near so much
Joseph Gray
L, Light, Mastuda, Light's dad and Ryuk are smartly written.
Joshua Stewart
Being able to predict an enemies actions requires far more intelligence than avoiding being caught with an extremely inconspicuous ability.
Anyone could have been as proficient with the Death Note as Light. I don't see anyone else being able to engineer the rebellion like Zero did.
Then theres motivation. "I will eliminate allll crime in this world." Kek. That's the ideal of a smart man? Pedantic. Useless even.
"I want to save my sister." Completely realistic.
It wasnt just. Aha! I predicted you'd do that. It involved thorough analysis of various factors to accurately predict the actions of Britannia.
Light was predictable. Lelouch was not.

based logh bro

lights idea was to create a world where he would pose as god and get people to follow his ideals also lelouch being able to predict his opponents to the extent he did was bullshit
Connor Ward
Lelouch literally predicted an entire conversation including the time to speak
