Can you imagine the absolute existential horror it is to be a side character in an anime? Especially in a school setting.
Enter (You). There's nothing wrong with you, really. You're sociable, well-mannered, friendly, healthy, and you've got a good mind on your shoulders. But it seems that no matter you do, you are forever cursed to mediocrity. You will never be the centre of attention. You will never take the stage, in spite of all of your efforts,. You becoming anything more than a faceless figure in the crowd is just not meant to be. The universe has deemed it so.
Enter those kids with the weird-colored hair. Pink. Blue. Orange. Did they dye hair like that? What a bunch of attention whores, right?....no. They were born like that. And for some reason or another, no matter where they go, no matter what social setting they're in, no matter what activity they partake in, the world always revolves around them. Their lives are far more interesting and wacky than yours, and they attract people like magnets. Groupies, fans, rivals, love interests, enemies. And it's not like they're asking for it, they just have it. They've always had it. It's like they're living on a different planet and you're on the outside looking in.
To make matters worse, they also happen to be incredibly talented in whatever thing they pursue. The smartest kids in school? Weird hair colors. The captains of the sport teams? Weird hair colors. The uncannily charismatic student council with an impossibly far reach? Weird hair colors. The most charming students everybody has the hots for, including the teachers? Weird hair colors. The funniest kids in class that everybody laughs with? Weird hair colors. Wherever there is a centre of attention to be occupied, they are always there without fail. Never you.
It's like living among a higher class of humans that are just plainly superior to you from birth, and their appearance indicates that superiority. It's for everybody to see.
I like studying and prefer to avoid drama and don't need anything special to happen to facilitate by purpose in life so it wouldn't effect me in the slightest. I just wanna read and write and have a bit of fun on weekends. if someone offered me a main character kind of life I would politely but firmly tell them to leave.

If you’re a side character you have a healthy circle of friends that just don’t get screen time and you’re exempted from whatever harrowing shenanigans are going on. Sounds pretty comfy honestly.

user sometimes life is fine in the background. Its peaceful. Live your life on a farm in a rural area. Enjoyable life.
How is anything you described different from the real life of the average Zig Forums poster besides the hair colors?
William Peterson
>average Zig Forums poster >sociable >well-mannered >friendly >healthy >good mind on your shoulders
Anthony Lopez
That's basically my real life

welcome to my life for the longest time i thought i was gonna die somehow at 18 and anything after would be 'playing the epilogue' here i am ten years later still doing that, except now all the other characters departed and left me all alone
and now in my solitude amidst the void, which i coveted and desired so, my own story can begin. one without comparison or competition, one for myself, told by myself.
Jack King
Uuuhhh... KINO!?
Parker Brown
The way my life is going right now I pray to be one of the whos who side characters in anime
Ryan Young
everybody is living their own anime you just don't know what happens when that perfectly average high schooler gets home
Luke Perez
I honestly can't stand the hair colors sometimes, like I understand branching out character designs but at least pick better colors than some bland electric blue or something.
Wyatt Roberts

I like when random background characters actually get to have odd hair colors and hair styles (if the main cast has those), it makes the world feel bigger.
doesnt change the fact that they all get bland as fuck designs.
Blake Harris
do you want them to look like kabuki actors who have extremely rare birth defects or something
Daniel King
is this the anti-kino?
Noah Lewis
what was the original face even supposed to convey?
Kevin Williams
no but atleast make them have somewhat unique clothing.
William Moore
This one background character in a single shot of the original YuGiOh anime has always stuck with me. His design is so cool and memorable, but he doesn't look like a gimmick character either. He looks like he could be an important character, but he's just around for a few seconds.
