THIS whole episode was so fucking powerful bros. utena fucking PUNCHED -- FUCKING PUNCHED -- the ground, forced herself up, limped to anthy's coffin (but not before BTFO'ING AKIO) and inspired anthy so much that she saved herself. fucking incredible show

The greatest anime of all time

It's one of the best at least, that's for sure. It's pretty much perfect, with my only tiny gripe being Kanae's fate left unknown.

Utena doesn't have the greatest anything in anime history.

Utena discovering Anthy’s secret incest with Akio was the greatest moment in anime history by far

Seethe harder Evacuck. Your coomer bait show has never been good

All protagonists should turn into cars.

I don't know who's behind this post, but I'm guessing it's you OP.

Leave this inflammatory shit out of Utena threads. I've noticed some weird posting trends recently that were not present in our last two big threads. We're already a minority on Zig Forums, keep this up and you're gonna kill all discussion of the show here, since this will turn even other fans of it away from the threads. And for the last time, drop this obnoxious baiting style of posts.
>is [thing from utena] the best ever???
Stop. You want people to discuss the shoe without anybody coming here to shit talk us? Don't invite it then.

>discuss the show

Nothing fills the void. I regret ever watching this because now I'll never know peace or be whole again.

both eva and utena are based

need to rewatch this sometime

Why?

That title belongs to Gungrave.

One of the greatest. That much is certain.
I think there are enough shows with near perfect endings out there that it's just a matter of taste.

They're two sides of the same coin, anyone who praises one while shitting on the other is an idiot. Ikuhara and Anno are almost-boyfriends for a reason.

I've never watched this, but why is it so loved?

It has the best car in anime history

this but nanami
could you go into detail? I though it was good but that's it

Pretty much for any reason a given anime would be liked. Great story, great characters, great aesthetics, etc. Except this one has also an extra layer of surrealism and abstractions, so it's in that pedigree of "bizarre shows" that people love to analyse and really dig into.

no

>could you go into detail?
what do you wanna know?

alright. For the whole STUCO except Nanami everything ended on a nice tone, but Nanami clearly got the short end of the deal. What do u make of that?
And then it stills feels a bit weird that Anthy finds courage in Utena failing (to become a prince). Maybe Anthy does see her as her prince?

>What do u make of that?
I don't think she got the short end of the deal, personally. She made peace with her feelings about her brother, she's no longer obsessed with him, and is now ready to move on with her life.

>And then it stills feels a bit weird that Anthy finds courage in Utena failing (to become a prince). Maybe Anthy does see her as her prince?
No, the real goal for Utena's character arc is for her to REFUSE becoming a Prince (and refuse becoming a Princess). That's because Anthy doesn't need a Prince to protect her, she needs a friend to love her. And that's what Utena became at the end when she admitted that can't become a prince, she became a friend/romantic partner instead. And this is why Anthy gained courage from her admission of that, because Anthy was always disillusioned with the idea of the Prince, she never liked it in the first place.

I keep a pastebin handy just for questions like this. It only covers the main theme of the story, which is "growing up and becoming an adult", it doesn't cover other topics of discussion, but for the purpose of your question, it should prove sufficient:

thanks. Good pastebin.
One thing I didn't pick up though. Does Utena actually realize that what Anthy needs is a friend and that by renouncing to be a prince she is helping her?

awesome

>Does Utena actually realize that what Anthy needs is a friend and that by renouncing to be a prince she is helping her?
She does, yes, it happened in two steps, one before the final duel, and one during it.
>Pre-duel: When she confessed to Anthy that she really only became her Prince to feel good about herself.
>In-duel: When Anthy stabbed her for insisting on becoming a Prince.
She put two and two together and was like "wait a minute....maybe she doesn't need a prince"

yes. part of her renouncing princedom was realizing she had begun to see and treat anthy the exact same way as the male princes she had been looking down on the whole time, and that so long as she was competing according to their way of doing things she could never make Anthy happy

thanks. maybe I'll write another pastebin to talk about the other themes of the show sometime, but really, once you understand the coming-of-age narrative, you've pretty much understood most of the show.

By the way, I'm not sure if I emphasised this in the pastebin, but it's as important for Utena to let go of the Prince role as it is for Anthy.

It's because she finds comfort in playing Prince. It's a childish ideal that was imparted on her when she was a kid (Akio giving her a Rose Crest). It's a mental crutch, essentially, it gives her purpose in life. Heck, Utena's white knighting attitude was apparent in hindsight even before she met Anthy. When Saionji posted Wakaba's love letter on the school's board, her first reaction was to go and pick a fight with him, to "shield/save" her friend from him. Now, you might think that that's noble of her to do, but remember, it's that wide-eyed chivalry specifically that's been holding Utena back. She always felt the need to white knight to feel good about herself, it's the only way she knows to validate herself.

So when she confronts herself about this on the roof with Anthy, she started (but not yet finished) letting go of the Prince role that she embraced in her childhood. She realised that it's just an ego-boosting mechanism that she has taken for granted. So she only becomes an adult when she lets go of it for good.

You mean the part where utena turns into a car? Just checking.
