ITT: Great First Episodes

What are some good first episodes/pilots? They can either set you right up for the show or work well as a stand alone story.

I wish first episodes being 50' was an actual trend.
Katanagatari also had a great 50' first episode

Every Katanagatari episode was 50'.

BusSlut and 1st cap was top tier.

yes I know. But I mean how they use those 50' to make a good first episode

I still want a season 2, god dammit. Though I'm probably the only one.

fucking yes. Such a memorable show

Rokka's was really good. Explained the basics of the world and plot, drew interest in the characters, set the aesthetic direction, and did it all through action and visuals as much as dialogue and exposition.

I think people underestimate how much first episodes can have an impact on the viewer, if the first episode hooks you into the story then its done a far better job than just lazily doing it near the middle, hence why i don't believe in the "It gets good in 30 episodes" meme

it had a good start but I dropped it half way. Did I miss anything good?

this. Having a weak first episode doesn't mean the show is bad but it's a point against

Steins;Gates anime adaptation has one of the strongest pilot episodes I've ever seen.

Are you getting anime confused with games or something? Anime hardly ever get that many episodes.

I was just making a general example

Then why did you call it a meme, implying it's a general trend or a broadly held idea?

Haruhi's first episode in broadcast order was great. I would have probably dropped it if I had watched in chronological order but this was hilarious

source please

Came here to post this

It's a broadly held idea people parrot to all kinds of shows and media, not just anime. If it takes the story god knows how long to get """good""" then i question the quality of the overall medium

Haruhi throwing this at you at the very beginning was confusing in a hilarious way

highschool of the dead
I'm telling you because of the numbers. Next time use google fag

Amagami ss had a great first episode.

YuYu Hakusho

Symphogear's first episode is one of the best bait and switch/subversions I've ever seen, especially if you kept up with how the show was advertised and PVs before it aired.
>hype up a character to be the protagonist for weeks to come only to kill her off right away and throw that role on some character everybody thought would be a side character
>go as far to even hire an expensive seiyuu and advertise full character songs beforehand to keep up the ruse
