Half of the charm in Dragon Ball was that Toriyama is excellent at panel flow and had a knack for good pacing. The absence of those things, and that the artstyle isn't actually a perfect copy (the guy who did that Yamcha one shot was better) makes it feel like a poor imitation most of the time

Apparently Toriyama used to do no work for a whole week and just shit out the chapter overnight. Toriyama is undeniably tremendously talented but also incredibly lazy, which goes a long way to explain the current state of the franchise. That and he's already sitting on fat stacks.
On the other hand I don't carry that much of a torch for his writing, but at minimum he made it fun and moved it along, which is more than you can say for most modern WSJ mangaka
