holy fuck is the Hohenheim in the 2003 anime a piece of shit or what. why does the series try to paint him as a good guy? or better yet the 2003 anime hás no idea what to make of him. it's like they try to show him in a rather neutral way, but learning more towards the positive side. And people say 2003 is better than Brotherhood? 2003 tries to do so much shit while being miserably incompetent at it. Hohenheim in 03 is a complex character. I find his reason for leaving far more compelling than Bro Hohenheim, who left because he had to save the world. Broho Hohenheim is rather a boring character.

03 Hohenheim is an ensentially a lost soul, with a checkered past. He’s an affable fellow, womanizer, and charismatic man. He’s a deeply flawed character overall. He sacrificed thousands of ppl. Transmuted his dead son, and ran away. Left his next family because he couldn’t burden them with his failing mortality. He was a coward who couldn’t stand up to Dante.

03 is the superior series right up until Hughes' death. Over both the manga and BH, it had far superior pacing that builds up to the death and makes it a memorable, pivotal scene that defined the series in people's minds just as much as Nina. We still have a Hughes banner.
After that though, 03 ran out of content to adapt and dovetails into fan fiction territory. Just jump ship to Brotherhood at that point.

03 behaves like someone who would think it's a good idea to sacrifice thousands of people to live longer, get cold feet about it, yet keep doing it anyways. He's riddled with shame and regret. Brotherhood your typical shounen character who upon seeing the abomination that his body has become, secludes himself to master it by talk-no-jutsuing every soul in him so that he can proceed to master the legendary philosopher stone jutsu and save the world. Along the way he fucks some woman, starts a family, and then dips for no reason other than because he could.
Both are pieces of shit and the one who is arguable more evil is the more sympathetic of the two. Goes to show how being written like a human can go a long way. That and 03 just looks better. Brotherhood looks like he got his face flattened along the floor ala Mozgus.

Hohenheim was a far more nuanced and realistic character than how he was protrayed in Brotherhood. Further to that can I just add that the antagonist of Brotherhood was so much worse ad childish and the closer to the end we got the more kiddy shounen-like it got with the ridiculous interactions and moral preaching as well as final fights. It was terribly cringeworthy.
2003 managed to not just take an incomplete manga with a good concept but elevate it to an extremely good storyline with characters with better depth (all the homunculi back stories were far more endearing for instance), excellent plot progression, but overall maintaining a good balance lighthearted comedy with a gradual but well thought out transition to the darker aspects of the story as it continued and all the moral and philosophical questions presented (Ed having to retrieve part of his dead mothers body to defeat Greed).
I just don't know how Brotherhood fans can call BH better when it was objectively more kiddy and worse as an anime than 2003 with numerous more cop-outs and deus-ex machinas and very much worse plot progression.

All those arcs were kino and you know it. They did more to flesh out the world inhabited by ED and Al as well as serve importantly to build up the character of Ed.
