Seeing the Land of waves manga for the first time in almost 17 years and also watching the first movie again. I realize something, Sasuke really wasn't a dick like folks made him out to be.
He honestly just seemed to be either really deep thought, or assessing the situation from afar. As opposed to someone who thought of himself better than everyone.
He wasn't even that big of a dick to Naruto, it seemed like just wanted him to get his shit together and he even defended him a couple of times. The only time he really seemed antagonistic was the "baby-kun" remark.
He wasn't even that big of jerk to Sakura; they were on a missions and the enemy could strike at any time, he had to remain focused. Hence why I don't see where all this gay shit came from.
The sasuke that was a dickhead seemed to have emerged after the end of the sand/sound invasion. I think we have that image of him ingrained because of shippuden lasting as long as it did.
Sauce was pretty cool up until the Sasuke retrieval arc. His design sucked though. Shorts just don't work on guys.

Sasuke was never really a dick in early Naruto. I guess you can count the parts were he teased Naruto as him being dick, but that's about it. As soon as he told Sakura that she was annoying, and fed Naruto lunch it was pretty obvious he wasn't that big of a dick.

I’m glad the Naruto storytime is opening people’s eyes. I’ve only read the manga and it’s frustrating as hell discussing lore and characters when everyone seems to get their info about Naruto from anime fillers.

Sasuke was added on suggestion of Shonen Jump to add a rival character for Naruto in order to market the series better. If you look into the behind a scenes and learn what arcs were cut short it paints a picture that the author really was trying to go for his original plans but things were rushed to go at Shonen Jump's pace. This is why Naruto ends up treating like Sasuke as a best friend which is mostly shown in flashbacks while Sasuke was an asshole to everyone, and why Sasuke in Shippuden changes his motivations every 20 to 30 chapters. You can in fact get almost the exact same manga if you imagined Sasuke being removed from the series because most threats were completely external. And just to add a little more, the reason Shikamaru is reskinned as his kid in Boruto is because Kishimoto mentioned he didn't get a chance to write Shikamaru as much as he wanted to. Given the fact that Shikamaru was promoted before Naruto that makes it seem like Shikamaru was meant to be Naruto's best friend from the start.
