Seeing the Land of waves manga for the first time in almost 17 years and also watching the first movie again. I realize something, Sasuke really wasn't a dick like folks made him out to be.
He honestly just seemed to be either really deep thought, or assessing the situation from afar. As opposed to someone who thought of himself better than everyone.
He wasn't even that big of a dick to Naruto, it seemed like just wanted him to get his shit together and he even defended him a couple of times. The only time he really seemed antagonistic was the "baby-kun" remark.
He wasn't even that big of jerk to Sakura; they were on a missions and the enemy could strike at any time, he had to remain focused. Hence why I don't see where all this gay shit came from.
The sasuke that was a dickhead seemed to have emerged after the end of the sand/sound invasion. I think we have that image of him ingrained because of shippuden lasting as long as it did.
Sauce was pretty cool up until the Sasuke retrieval arc. His design sucked though. Shorts just don't work on guys.

Sasuke was never really a dick in early Naruto. I guess you can count the parts were he teased Naruto as him being dick, but that's about it. As soon as he told Sakura that she was annoying, and fed Naruto lunch it was pretty obvious he wasn't that big of a dick.

Sasuke was added on suggestion of Shonen Jump to add a rival character for Naruto in order to market the series better. If you look into the behind a scenes and learn what arcs were cut short it paints a picture that the author really was trying to go for his original plans but things were rushed to go at Shonen Jump's pace. This is why Naruto ends up treating like Sasuke as a best friend which is mostly shown in flashbacks while Sasuke was an asshole to everyone, and why Sasuke in Shippuden changes his motivations every 20 to 30 chapters. You can in fact get almost the exact same manga if you imagined Sasuke being removed from the series because most threats were completely external. And just to add a little more, the reason Shikamaru is reskinned as his kid in Boruto is because Kishimoto mentioned he didn't get a chance to write Shikamaru as much as he wanted to. Given the fact that Shikamaru was promoted before Naruto that makes it seem like Shikamaru was meant to be Naruto's best friend from the start.

I feel the same way. I guess Shippuden and fanfiction really warped perception on entire character where it bled into Part I. So far Sasuke has been the guy keeping his teammates in check, and the Forest of Death was showing Sasuke crumble under pressure while fighting Orochimaru and needing his teammates to get his head back into the game - it's actually kino when you look at it and really upsets me over where Kishimoto eventually took things.

yes and no, Before Naruto, Kishi started his career with a one-shot named Karakuri about people who were turned into human weapon by the government. The "Karakuri" has eyes that turned into red when they use their power, the clothes that later became the Uchiha standard outfit the cat/ rat guardian and the MC Kuri who looks significantly Sasuke alike. Even the concept of fighting against the government and revenge of Kuri/ Sasuke was developed even before Naruto began

I've been watching the anime from the beginning and Sasuke just seems really weak. Naruto pretty much catches up to him by the fight against Haku and Sasuke only really has Sharingan to hold over him while Naruto isn't yet aware of Kyuubi. In the Chuunin exam and the arcs following it Sasuke witnesses how Naruto has left him in the dust with his rapid development which makes him go full edgelord and accept Orochimaru's offer for power.

Shit like Gai/Lee's gate opening is about manipulating your chakra paths so that your body and organs can excel at near their max capacity and byakugan's whole combat style is attacking the chakra points to harm organs and cut off chakra circulation.

The latter goes through a redemption arc and ends up head of Ninja UN to realize Naruto's vision of a better world. The genocide thing is a shitfest even kishi couldn't fix. Unless you heavily retcon it there's no saving it. The way I'd fix it is that not all the clan got genocide, about 50% that was actively planning on toppling the regime. Itachi is basically a traitor who prioritized his brother's safety. The rest got scattered in smaller villages (the ninjas among them even get missions) and had seals applied to them that prevent them from getting revenge/brainwashing their children, not that they'd want to either way. Sasuke learns that his clan weren't just victims, but that maybe they didn't deserve getting crushed that way either way. Either way you can shape the story so that Sasuke isn't a cuck anymore. You could argue he's a cuck in the original series because he sweeps everything under the rug because of he's impressed by naruto's gayness.
