Naruto really is the most relatable, best shonen character of the popular shonen. Some might say Gon but really he isn't that relatable to the majority of people. Naruto has more of a well written character than DBZ, One Piece and Bleach. That's not to say that Naruto has a better story than any of these other main characters. It just means that Naruto by far wins out on being a shonen protagonist. Kind of a best of the worst example of poor character writing.
Some will disagree with me. But you can't deny the truth.
This is my personal fanfic headcanon. Naruto's character should represent hope. The manga should have put him in more hard situation where he can't just rasengan his way through. Having to be a leader, having to sacrifice people, losing friends while doing the right thing, being betrayed etc... but despite all the hardship he would still have hope for the future. Change is slow and there's only so much you can do in a lifetime. That could have been his answer to Pain, not giving up to despair and keep hoping and working for a better future.

I personally think early Ichigo is better written than any version of Naruto just on being a blatant yusuke expy but with actual trauma in his backstory that informs his actions of obsessive mamoru without it getting to obnoxious levels like shirou with the added bonus of he is regularly punished for his recklessness and doesn't win every single encounter he has with lol plot.

Haters moan about how he is bestowed with apparently "too much" powers, but reality is that Nartuo starts out entirely untalented and unable to do any jutsu, and he climbs his way up with sheer willpower, and wins battles by thinking up tactics, which he does on his shoes after getting beaten up. And that's even more respect to him. Naruto's hidden superpowers were only made available to him way later, when the story escalates enough to necessitate them. I find no such problem with this trope, it's very typical in almost every entertainment medium on earth. But even if you hopelessly hate it for some reason, it does not justify even a fraction of the orders of magnitude of hatred Naruto that receives over all other shounen protagonists combined.
