Contracts are a big deal and can really fuck you up. Making a contract with anybody just because is a bad idea. Also Echidna was arguably his best bet because she's the kind who wants to know everything and thus has the biggest motivation to help him. Turns out she's an insane psychopath so allying with her would mentally scar you over the course fo your now relatively short life. He wouldn't get the same out of a contract with most other witches.

Best part is that since you reset on death, you basically cheat her out of her side of the deal. Sure inifnite timelines is a grimdark possibility, but if you cared about that you'd never let yourself die in the first palce, or otherwise accet you already failed and should selfishly find happiness for yourself.

But he's already killed himself three or four times. I don't see how letting Echidna give him the ability to take his deaths more calmly is insanity. He's not exactly in a sane situation to begin with.
