Besides cucking out on actually killing kabu I think it was a pretty good ending.
Natsume rushing off to help kabu activate deca dance and then not actually being needed there because of all the impression she had already made on him was fantastic.

They DID kill him though. The new Kabu is just a restored backup, plus he and Natsume still lost three years worth of time they could have been spending together because his backup data was in the tablet that Jill lost in the rubble during the battle.
Being separated for three years from a person you were that close to before still hurts a lot, so it's not all sunshine and roses just because he was eventually able to come back.

I love seeing recent mecha anime pay tribute to Gundam and other predecessors with shoutouts like that but put their own flair on it.
