Tough question to ask.
Basically the owner of the show went to the studio and said "look at all this stuff! Let's do an anime!"
to which they responded: "You get six episodes."
So he tried.
Then he tried again, and he got a series, which is basically a retelling plus more stuff. Also movies!
Then he tried again, and they made Tenchi in Tokyo, which sort of killed the franchise as it went off-canon in a big way.
Then there was derivative and spinoff works
and finally the guy was like "fuckit, I can't tell the story the way I want it to be told

Universe-building.
First, there was Tenchi. He created the Chousin, and then fucked off.
The Chousin were Lady Tokimi, Tsunami, and Washu. They couldn't figure out how they came to be, so they decided to create the multiverse, and then fuck with it in order to prove that there was something more powerful than them.
Tsunami did the tree thing with the Jurai, and later merged with Sasami. When Sasami grows up she'll literally be a multiverse goddess.
Washu liked to experiment and blow shit up, and she created Ryoko.
Lady Tokimi was like LOL I'M KINDA CRAZY and did her own thing, which was sometimes villainous.
Washu had a kid once, but it was taken from her, so she vowed no more kids, (but she makes Ryo-Ohki, a sentient, self-aware cat-rabbit that can also turn into a spaceship) until Mihoshi accidentally shows up. Turns out Mihoshi is like her greatgreatgreatgreatgreatgreatgreatgreatgreatx10,000,000-granddaughter and the reason why Mihoshi, while being an utter moron manages to have a job is she one attribute of Washu's power: impossibly good luck.
Washu is made happy by this, and decides she wants to make babies with Tenchi Muyo.
Tenchi Muyo eventually merges with Tenchi, and becomes Supergod. A cool aftereffect of becoming Tenchi's friend is immortality. He just passively generates immortality because he doesn't want any of his friends or family to die.

but in order to experince it, you have to commit to to *A LOT*. Including doujinshi because nobody will publish him, so he has to do it himself.
