You must remember that Ragi is the one narrating most of the series and its pretty clear that he is only narrating the side of things that make him out to be the hero or at the very least not actively being a selfish dickbag. The times when we get to see Hanekawa's or Senjougahara's retelling of events, he comes across a lot less gallant and selfless and way more of a narcissistic weirdo who has a little too much interest in young girls.
The animu picks up on this too: almost no one besides the main girls and him are shown on-screen or even referenced at any point when Araragi is doing the narration.
I posit that Araragi is conveniently leaving out the parts in which he is ramming his pet loli or sniffing imouto panties or whatever degeneracy du jour he's doing between oddity adventures.
