Oh My Goddess

Please put Belldandy NTR memes aside, how popular was this franchise in it's heyday?

It's one of the few classic manga/anime that I legitimately never got into

It wasn'tNTR. You are thinking of a different goddess there.
It was forced ED to preserve her purity.

It got multiple anime adaptations so I guess it was pretty big back in the 90s and 2000s, inside its niche. Also it arrived to the west when otaku was a "cool" word the anime fandom used to identified themselves and they were mostly unaware of the real connotations or who was the real target audience of AMG so they could take it as Japanese Bewitched

They'll never going to animate the ending, right? Feels like a waste after 6 OVAs in the 90s, a movie, 2 TV seasons and 3 more OVAs

There's currently a sequel series being made by someone else right? Wish it was getting translated.

It's a spin-off rather than a true sequel. I guess Fujishima couldn't refuse to get money without doing anything

oh man, this was the anime that turned me into a weeb. binged this whole series, used to borrow all the manga i could find from local libraries

Reminder that Kosuke Fujishima had a real life harem, he's currently married to a girl like one third of his age and he may or may not sleep with Naoko Takeuchi.

belldandy was wholesome waifu, but fuck me.. urd... she can step on me whenever

>belldandy was wholesome waifu,
After 2012, she was a divorced waifu.

It's always curious to look up to old otaku franchises to see how much the market changed. AMG was always a male adolescent power fantasy, probably born from Fujishima's own insecurities, and it could connect with many disfranchised young men seething with the economical stagnation and working women, but the formula got so overexploited that AMG is imposible on the modern market without drastic changes.

Drew amazing art for the Tales series and does whatever he fucking wants. He is 4channel approved.

Very popular. AMG and Love Hina were so transformative we still can see their influence on modern anime

Elaborate i know nothing before 2010

Good news.
Dates are largely in chronological order, with a few exceptions during the renaissance.
2012 comes after 2010.

But as for your question, there was a chapter that revealed that the protagonist had been mind controlled to never feel any lust, so that he wouldn't lay his hands on Belldandy.
And that sent a huge shock wave through the fandom.

So the purityfags rejoiced while the self-inserters and romance fans raged uncontollably?

>the purityfags rejoiced
Why would they rejoice? Everybody knew that he'd never touched her.

Oh, the mind control was lifted a few chapters later, but the damage was already done.

i'm going to have to rewatch this whole series again asap

The chibi series with the rat MC was fun

It also wouldn't stop anyone else from touching her or the others if they wanted it.

same

Why would anyone rejoice in mind rape?

>Please put Belldandy NTR memes aside

>Became famous for waifu fodder
>End making character designs for fujoshis
Is this a trend? The same happened to Katsura

>Earth t-shirt
>Mamoru is Sailor Earth
Was it intentional?

In 1999 when I was 13 I got hold of the ovas and a year later some of the manga.
I remember that the issues used to be released like American comic book issues were, the editions they sold were I western reading order aswell and the graphic novels were also bigger and more expensive.
I did eventually finish the manga in my 30s.
I automatically heard the ova's opening theme after seeing OPs picture.
One thing I remember about the manga was how the art was always evolving, I also remember the manga forgot about his two macho friends after a while, Sayoko and Aoishima seemingly vanished from the manga aswell.
They never animated the arc where Sayoko got powers.
I remember being attracted to Skuld, mostly because I found her the funniest in the cast and she had small breasts.

I'm in your thread, invoking your nostalgia

I remember the ova's English commentary being amusing.

Another thing I recall about the manga is that later chapters were less slice of lifey.

Additionally, I remember my dad saying of Urd "I liked the dark skin one that wore the nice skirts"
I also remember him commenting that lust from full metal alchemist had nice hair.

He seemed into Chihiro aswell from what I remember aswell.

Okay yes this is truly, I do remember Skuld was basically my dream anime girl in 1999.

I'm not denying LH was popular as fuck or anything but how was it influential at all? It was just continuing what AMG and TM set up before it

Not him, but I feel like Love Hina set the standard for what a clear harem with tsundere lead would be

>Additionally, I remember my dad saying of Urd "I liked the dark skin one that wore the nice skirts"
Your dad has good taste

I remember Sci fi channel aired the movie once and I found it very hard to follow without series knowledge.
