Recently watched Castle of Cagliostro and currently watching the the 2015 season of Lupin III, mainly because I happened to watch the OP. Any opinions on that season? I personally enjoy it a ton. Also, what should I watch when I'm done?
Also, I could imagine a lot of people not thinking much of Zenigata because he's always the loser, but I think he's pretty awesome.

Watch in order from part 1 if you like it, part 5 has a lot of references to the previous seasons so consuming the original stuff will improve part 5 for you. You're watching part 4 if you didn't know.
Yeah, I know. I suppose I'll start from part 1 after this. What about the movies? The Woman Called Fujiko Mine stuff seems interesting, though a lot darker, from what I've seen. Especially the Goemon one seems pretty crazy.
This doesn't have the most recent stuff but it's good.
You can watch the Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko movies without watching WCFM first. the show it's bad but some people really dislike it.
Zenigata either comes off as a complete loser or the world's greatest policeman, that just isn't able to compete with Lupin, depending on the show or episode.
In older shows he's mostly a joke. But in the newer stuff, they tend to let him have genuinely cool moments every once in a while. I think there's even an OVA where he basically saves Lupin's bacon. Just can't remember which...
To offer a counterpoint, I disagree with much of this.
The show isn't bad*
Explain please. This has worked for me so far as a rough guideline of what is worth it to watch or not. I've just been ignoring the 4/10 and below.
I'll check it out, thanks.
I'll probably give them all a shot at some point. Any specific order?
I can only judge from what I've seen, but in general he comes off as very competent, but always a step behind Lupin.
One thing I'm wondering about: Lupin is an extremely successful thief, but somehow it doesn't seem like he ever gets any richer. It's probably just the kind of thing you're not supposed to think about, and it seems to be the same with Arsene Lupin himself, but still.
I'd watch WCFM with the disclaimer that the finale sucks donkey dick. If you disregard the "big mystery" they tease constantly, it's a pretty enjoyable and stylish romp.
Basically the same as every JJ Abrams show.
He steals not for the money but the fun, he spends his money on gadgets and a new car when his blows up for the 300th time.
>One thing I'm wondering about: Lupin is an extremely successful thief, but somehow it doesn't seem like he ever gets any richer. It's probably just the kind of thing you're not supposed to think about, and it seems to be the same with Arsene Lupin himself, but still.
It's very likely that he just gives most of the money away that he doesn't blow on idle fancies. He genuinely isn't in it to get rich, but for the craft and the thrill involved.
Also Fujiko tends to steal his loot. Though the same might be true for her. It's basically impossible for people to burn through so much cash so quickly.
So my guess is there are a lot of orphanages named after them.
I don't think Island of Assassins and Tokyo Crisis are better than Cagliostro, but Crisis is good. Return the Treasure, Voyage to Danger and Alcatraz Connection are only ok. I like Dragon of Doom more than all of those. Blood Spray should be higher. Napoleon's Dictionary and Twilight Gemini are mediocre. Mamo isn't my favorite but it probably deserves better than 5. Gold of Babylon is actually my second favorite theatrical movie in the franchise and way underrated. Hemingway Papers has like one really good cut of animation in it but I guess the chart points that out. Other than that it's now outdated with the release of subsequent specials.
>Any specific order?
Jigen, Goemon then Fujiko.
Yeah, I know he does it for the thrill, just like his namesake, but I can't say I've seen him use many gadgets beyond his wire and disguises. And I can't imagine that Fiat costing all that much. Seems like there'd still be plenty money left.
That's what I kind of imagine. Japan seems to like the Robin Hood style gentleman thief a lot, so it would make sense. Actually makes me wonder about the original Arsene Lupin, because the situation is similar, but in one story he complains about the woman he was supposed to steal from giving the potential loot to charity.
Thanks.
Thanks for the response, I'll give gold of Babylon a try then.
Fair warning, it can be pretty weird if you don't know what to expect. It's peak part 3 style.
The part 4 car is an outlier when it comes to car destruction, in parts 1 and 2 his Hitler-tribute-mobile gets fucking blown up 7/10 episodes.
Watching episode 13 of the 2015 season right now. I love how it just shows that feeling of respect and a kind of affection Zenigata has for Lupin.
Well yes, but even then, those cars probably don't cost enough to spend all that heist money, I'd think.
Basically all the characters run certain modes of characterization. This is how I see it.
>Lupin
Best Case: A lovable scamp, that isn't infallible
Worst Case: An obnoxious Mary Sue
>Jigen
Best Case: A snarky but reliable bro
Worst Case: A bitchy bullet dispenser
>Goemon
Best Case: A huge dork with gap moe charm
Worst Case: An emotionless cliche on legs
>Fujiko
Best Case: A playful foil and wildcard that keeps things interesting
Worst Case: A deceitful, cold bitch
>Zenigata
Best Case: A principled man that enjoys the hunt and isn't as easily duped as your average cop
Worst Case: an Inspector Clouseau rip-off
I've also been wondering, how's the art and animation quality in the older series? The 2015 series has some of the most consistently great quality I've seen in anime in general, while also keeping that iconic style.
Well, that doesn't surprise me. When you have such a long series, the quality is gonna waver.
Part 5 maintains that quality, parts 1 and 2 were made in the 1970s but personally the obvious 70s animation has its own charm but it's not necessarily good or bad, part 3 has infamous animation.
70s animation could be good or bad in my eyes. How does it compare to Castle of Cagliostro? Also, what do you mean by "infamous"?
Part 1 looks great, Part 2, the longest, is also the worst looking part. Not in style so much as budgetary limitations.
As far as I can tell, budget is rarely the reason for bad art or animation, but I suppose that doesn't matter much.
Budgetary limitations was maybe the wrong word. It's 150 episodes vs only 20 something.
So perhaps more of a time constraint.

This can work as a quick look at each seasons animation, even though the OP is generally better than an average episode. This isn't every OP ever just most (it skips all but 1 of part 1's OPs). "At the request of YTV, Yūzō Aoki, who had experience with the previous Lupin III series as a key animator and storyboard artist, designed the characters and served as an animation supervisor. As this series continued its broadcast, differences in character design gradually emerged due to discrepancies in subcontracted studios, animation directors, and key animators, but there was no particularly thorough revision of the drawings, partly due to the fact that TV anime at that time did not require the character designs to stay on model as much as today. Towards the end of the series, the basic designs drastically changed to have a strong pop and gag touch. On the writing side of things, a number of screenwriters from the action and detective drama scene, including Hiroshi Kashiwabara, Hikaru Arai, Junichi Miyashita, and Toshimichi Ōkawa, participated in this series. Many of these writers have also worked on subsequent television specials." - en.m.wikipedia.org
You can definitely tell that designs have changed over time, but none of it looks bad. And damn, Jigen had quite the nose back in the day, didn't he?
