Does your mangaka have SOUL?
Does your mangaka have SOUL?
He's a vampire, he doesn't have a soul. Though I like reading his notes
no
Yes.
You cant really
Make lany cool Nicknames out of my moniker.
He literally has a book on making manga that you can read.
Yes.
its really terrible, too, its actually funny how bad the advice he gives is, for such an accomplished manga artist. its honestly so confusing that JoJo is loved for its art and aesthetics but its own author is genuinely under the delusion that it is extremely well written
What kind of advice did he give?
I don't remember everything off the top of my head, but I do recall that he basically assumed that Jonathan and Dio were widely regarded as brilliantly written, deep characters and that he needed to explain his high-level craft behind them. And he was saying stuff like, you have to base them on the classic archetypes of Roman theatre mixed with the extreme coolness of hollywood action heroes. I was like...dude, they're just buff bois who are cartoonishly good and evil
yes i'd say so
most cartoonishly good and evil characters are based off of 80s action movie archetypes and old dramas though. Also
>bois
>he didnt get part 1
He had some interesting anecdotes about how the shonen jump machine operates and his experiences with it, and honestly it explains a lot about the way he writes. Making every page on the basis of ''force the reader to turn the next page no matter what'' you can see how that turns into an obsessive action and makes him careless about anything that was previously established or what will follow, that way of thinking is incredibly hit or miss. Like I don't know what kind of ultra-judgemental ADHD audience of shounen jump this is what he describes, with an attention span of a goldfish, if you don't make them ''like'' the character right on their introduction, you're fucked, if the protagonist is not showing check-list virtues of a ''hero'', you're fucked. But that also explains why he puts effort when introducing characters and then later tends to completely discard those initial personalities.
Also a lot of the advice he gives is things he doesn't pays attention to himself, I understand this is a newer book and he's talking from trial and error experience but man, I still wish he took more of his own advice even now. Things like ''don't use coincidences'' or ''use natural dialogue'' or ''avoid samey characters'', pheew yeah, you got that right. There's surprisingly little about the art side of things in the book too, the thing he's ACTUALLY good at.
>but its own author is genuinely under the delusion that it is extremely well written
I wonder if countless emails from japanese fans saying they cried when these cardboard cutout characters are killed off or whatever made him think that way. I genuinely cannot tell with this guy sometimes.
Leaving Shonen Jump was the best thing that happened to JoJo it seems.
I heard it was just a bad translation
Of course - having a monthly schedule is far superior than a weekly schedule. He can actually take time to think things out, make his art shine, etc.,
Honestly I don't think I would agree, because his mindset kinda remained the same just transferred to a monthly schedule. His early shonen jump work was more entertaining.
Disagree mostly, 1, 3 and early 4 were crap
Well Araki does have the best anecdotes on his volumes
Pure soul
That sadly didn't help UQ Holder. It got more retarded after the switch to monthly releases.
i still think this looks cool out of context
post your manga
Suace?
Look at this Chad, he is the definition of soul. He is a little shy tho
One of the most iconic pictures in manga and Zig Forums, asks for sauce, how new are you?
I remember Raiku talking about riding his motorcycle and cosplaying kamen rider (or some character, I don't really recall the specifics. He seemed excited about getting a pair of driving boots) during Gash Bell.
100% Soul every manga, i really like Ojiro Makoto work
