The second time we see it he was indeed preaching bullshit but was stabbed by the other pilot. And even with that, the story never validates his opinion. On the contrary, precisely the conclusion of the fat boy is that the teacher is wrong and he can do better.

It was an overall solid series that has one extremely controversial and stupid plot element. We can discuss anything else about it if you'd like, but there's a reason that this one gets brought up more than anything else.
