"Scientists" getting individual superhero powers is the main thing I think, and that vastly overshadowing it as a social phenomenon.
It bothers me in western comic book shit too, like contriving reasons no one else could ever make like captain america serum, and there's no 100 thousand dollar budget iron man suit by tesla on sale even though going from the Wright brothers to thousands of P-38 Lightnings fighting over the Pacific only took 30 some years.

Ah, I guess I see what you mean. I think that aspect of the story is less obnoxious to me in FMA than in similar stories since alchemy fucks over most of the alchemists repeatedly and in ways that are impactful for their arcs and morality, so it doesn't feel quite as "free" as most superpowers do. Regardless, I can see how the over-the-top abilities would be disappointing if you wanted to see a more heady or realistic fictional science.

I went back and watched it within the last year to see if it was as good as I remembered it being when I saw it air. The early parts of the story first covered by 2003 are rougher than I remembered, but everything from Dublith and on is noticeably improved, and the final arc is tippy-top kino. Coming back to it with a better understanding of real-world alchemy and esotericism than when I first watched it (or 2003) has been interesting too, and I think the stuff with Truth, the homunculi's arcs, and the ending are stronger and more thematically complex than I originally appreciated.

It's a good, wholesome, and well-constructed shounen that deserves to be a staple, but anons calling it the best of all time desperately need to watch more shows.

I just started watching anime, and having finished HxH and FMA: B, I need to say I like HxH more, although FMA: B is also pretty good.

The thing that bothered me the most was the plot armor of characters, and the "convenience" of them being saved in the last moments. It was fun the first couple of times but later became stale. Characters and their arcs are amazing though.

I fundamentally dislike applying the question to a category as broad as anime, but my own criteria for greatness would include lasting influence on the medium. Something like Eva comes closer to it than FMA, though Eva has it's own share of flaws, admittedly.

I don't really agree with that. The story feels weird in parts but I thought what they did with the story was so much better than the typical globetrotting adventure in Brotherhood. The humonculous were conecptually more interesting too and 2003 Lust is an excellent character while she's just generic evil revenge fodder in BH.

I thought this too until I watched VEG.

Steins gate is garbage though.
