I'm not watching that but being fat legitimately makes him more interesting. If he was thin he'll just be like every dime a dozen battle harem LN protag with an inferiority complex for no good reason that no one has time to care about, that gets everything handed to him because he's the main character. Being fat at least gives him a reasonable character flaw that helps sell to the audience his underdog status and makes his hard-fought victories feel way more convincing.
