A combination of multiple factors :
one, their current stranglehold is pretty strong. By the time they figured out LINK's potential, cat was out of the bag.

Majority of linkies are in the age range of 20-30. If LINK takes a decade or two, or even longer, to become the cornerstone of the next industrial revolution, linkies are going to be middle aged by then. Wallets are just a bit of software used to communicate with the blockchain and pass your private key along. Hardware wallets are both an overkill and insufficiently secure.
If you want to be super paranoid autistic level secure, do the following -
1) Clean install linux on a fresh, non-china made HDD (or SSD) using a processor that doesn't come with an entire hidden OS (read a bit on that if interested).
2) Create a few wallets (maybe enough to keep each suicide of 1k separate?). Write down by hand on paper the seed phrases. Delete the wallets, use the phrases to restore the wallets once each to make sure they work.
3) Make paper copies of the seed phrases. Can make sure they each have a wrong word somewhere, so that one would need two of them to steal your shit from the wallet in question.
4) Store them in different places, some of them in vaults, some of them at home, some of them in a hole in the ground. Also learn the seed phrase, but keep in mind memory isn't super secure.
5) Transfer your link to the wallets.

Me, I'm not that paranoid, so I've made two paper wallet on my normal work machine that most likely isn't very infected, I've split my link equally between them and I store one copy at home and the other at my parent's basement. If/when link's price goes high enough, I'll probably invest into a bit more security and do all 5 steps. Will probably sell most of my LINK way before $1k and only keep the suicide stack till 0 or infinity. I am also just looking for a comfy retirement that I can get at around $200 per.
