Neither of these shows are pretentious. Pretentious doesn't mean "show I don't like".
An actual pretentious show would be Ergo Proxy, a show that's full of random symbolism and literary allusions, as well as namedropping philosophers despite none of these things having anything to actually do with the story being told and were intentionally put there to look smarter than it actually is.
Or Evangelion, which is full of religious symbolism. when Anno admits that the religious symbolism is meaningless and was just there to look cool since it's foreign and complex to Japanese audiences.
