I mean, let's face it, she is there as the ideal sex toy. It is good that she got given a retcon arc to have some character development, but in the original story she just fills in the quota.
You can probably make a very good story with just her as the main female. But as it were all the other girls in the show had more contribution to the harem.
i mean, it is unfair to her, because it seems she is actually an exceptionally above average warrior for her race, and that was the only reason she survives her own jinx status. But being a "decent warrior" doesn't cut it when you have a war goddess Herald around.
In the end, her low self esteem is very moe. But Itami is not interested in having just a moe girl hanging around. Itami just wants to know that she is willing to take her role as a companion seriously, that she would watch his back and he would watch hers. And that her attempt to push her slave status on him, insulted him.

Everything you said is correct, but I also can't get it up for any of the more child-like bodies for the actual heavy lifters of the crew. The dark skin/white hair combo doesn't hurt either. It's a purely physical attraction because I don't really enjoy her lack of self esteem myself.
Thankfully Delilah exists which is the best of both worlds. Capable, mature, and sexy. With a good dose of plot importance although I'm not sure how she fared in the WN/LNs.

It is a pity that the author moved on with a new set of characters in his books. Because I think Yao has a place as someone who Itami could train and leave his mark. All the other girls are strongly linked to their own social circles, and basically can't be moulded any further. Yao, however, openly admit that she severed all her ties with her village, And that's really what it means to be a slave; to be taken away from your community.
If Itami want her to stop talking about her slave status so much, he could simply give her a new identity. Itami could take upon himself the task to train her. As soon as she has a new community to belong to, she could no longer be a slave. She needs Citizenship. It might be too hard for her to get a Japanese one, hell humans in real life struggle to get such a thing in Japan. But being "citizen" is mutually exclusive to being a slave. So as soon as she gets some kind of citizenship somewhere her slavery legally ends. And I just think there is something good about Itami maybe teaching her the ways of the JSDF. Who they are, what they fight for, and how they fight.
All the other girls already have their social identities fixed, Yao is basically a blank slate compared to them.

The story of GATE is a story of wasted potential across all boards. I'd like your interpretation of Yao and it's not like there isn't a precedence for her maybe working towards Japanese citizenship because she outright rejects Hardy and her own village. If she's going to completely uproot herself, the next best thing could be to set her roots in her current "master's" homeland.
At the very least if they reworked her character she could become a kind of agent similar to Delilah who works with the JSDF as a kind of regional operator. If she got training from Itami that would just make her more prepared for the job.
