I dislike it from the standpoint of being vastly inferior to the vn, but I agree that it worked well as a highly compressed adaptation. this anime will probably suffer from many of the same structural problems.

I did too. It was good for its time and I even prefer S1s puritan artstyle over Kai's.
BUT the animation quality dropped hard as the series progressed and the bleached out colors made the anime look older than it is. And let's not forget Shmion's ladder scene
