Danpei is a good coach, better than someone like Kamogawa for instance.
Joe's brain damage isn't really his fault for the most part, the only thing you can blame Danpei for is being too gutless to throw in the towel more often (Which to be fair, Joe threatened to literally strangle him if he threw in the towel in the Carlos fight for example) and I guess his anger issues and alcoholism.
As far as being a teacher he's pretty good. He doesn't push his fighters too hard, he absolutely preaches the importance of being a balanced fighter (Which is especially noteworthy given this is the late 60's we're talking about, back when it was still feasible to be a one-dimensional fighter on the world level in Boxing, let alone in Japan), he knows when to call it quits when his fighter is taking too much damage in the ring (rare, even nowadays in Boxing. Corners normally have their guy fight to the death), and he will show tough love when needed.
