Subaru is a plot device whose IQ, competence, and personality switch arbitrarily based on whatever the scene demands. Re:Zero's writing is pathetically incompetent in general.

Subaru is a good character, I will never understand these complaints. He is an excellent vehicle for the core theme of Re:Zero and is critical in its subversion of the isekai self-insert fantasy.
Re: Zero is not a good show, butmostly for reasons that can't be pinned on the main character.

Subaru is still handed girls, he is handed powers, he is handed powerful allies, and all with minimum effort and ability of his own - all he has to do is suffer every now and then. And he could avoid most of it if he actually started asking the right questions and being more attentive and inquisitive about his surroundings rather than sperging out and yelling at people all the time. The self-insert fantasy is not about being Subaru but seeing what a retard he is and envisioning oneself to be doing better. Subaru is that pathetic that even the most retarded incompetent Hikki/NEET in Japan could see himself doing better, therefore getting all the girls, getting all the success, but with minimal suffering.
