Devilman Crybaby

Just finished Devilman Crybaby and wondering if it's worthwhile to watch the original Devilman, is it drastically different in terms of story or just minor differences?

Crybaby is an absurd bastardization of the original, and so is every other adaption to a much, MUCH lesser extent. You should definitely read the manga. Crybaby fucks up just about everything and the only point it's mildly accurate at is the last few episodes.

Obsessed

Denial

The original Devilman TV series is very different from the manga. Crybaby is a bit closer but still takes a lot of liberties and never really tries to be a direct adaptation despite sticking to some of the main plot points. The original OVAs are the closest adaptations but I'm still not very much of a fan of them either. Read the manga and watch whichever adaptations you want.

If by watch you mean read, then sure. If not, I can't vouch for the old ass anime, but the OVAs are incredible, especially the dub.

What did it fuck up, specifically?

>What did it fuck up, specifically?
Not him but even if you disregard the changes from the manga, some of the way some of the story was implemented was pretty poor. Two of the characters look really similar (the characters in the show even say this) and it makes it hard at times to know who is doing what. Miki's character in Crybaby is also much worse. They also gutted a lot of what goes into the paranoia about everyone being demons. People are still turning into demons/devilmen but I didn't think it had as much impact in Crybaby as in the manga.

And to add to what he said, it makes up for its lack of substance with shoehorned sexuality, like Akira ejaculating all over the place for no reason or jacking off.

Which characters looked the same again? The only thing that comes to mind is having two Mikis, but one is the main heroine and the other a donkey in disguise. Also the former's character is obviously completely different from the original, despite serving the same role at the end. I don't prefer the old or the new one, I kinda wish we got a half way between them, because this Miki has a lot more going on for her than being shocked at what's happening around her. The paranoia over who's a demon or not is very much still there my dude, it's just that the show is much shorter than the manga, iirc.
I don't know man, I don't find man different to be worse or better inherently, I didn't mind the changes at all, especially since Devilman has been done over and over and over. I like the Crybaby Akira much better but miss the absolute madman that the original Ryu was.

>lack of substance
How did you even measure this
>with shoehorned sexuality
You mean with teenagers, aka the peak of hormones in a person's life? Nigga the entire Devilman transformation, much like the original, is very much an analogue to going through puberty.
>like Akira ejaculating all over the place for no reason or jacking off.
Wet dreams are real

It was the guy that liked Miko who was part of the rapping group and the gay track guy that gets turned into a demon. The rap guy just dies at a party him and Miko go to while the track guy continues being around and it was just poorly executed imo. And no, the show isn't that much shorter than the manga. The manga is only 5 volumes.

Still the best Devilman anime adaptation

Other versions are different, but they're all garbage because the original is garbage.

It's worth watching a few episodes of the 70's show, but it's pretty much just monster of the week filler nonsense. The first OVA, Devilman: The Birth, is fucking amazing. The Demon Bird OVA is also pretty good, but nowhere as good as the first. Amon Apocalypse is the edgiest, most 90's thing ever, but still pretty good. It changes a lot of the story but it goes for more of a horror vibe.

Also, read the manga, faggot

The only good part of Devilman is the ending anyways. The rest is just the same generic muh humanity well dealing with impulses from devil possession. So Crybaby delivers the only part that matters well.

Read the manga, go for it.

Hyper based

yes read the manga

Just read the manga.
Based, Crybaby completely mishandles Ryo as a character.

Crybaby is shit just like every other adaptation save for maybe the first ova. If you liked it you may not like the manga because it's so different. It also is best enjoyed when you have some understanding of the general expectations of manga plotlines and characters at the time of it's release. Although that's not entirely neccesary, it helps to illustrate why the original was so shocking to people. Ryo became a new standard for anime twist villains because he was so well done in the original.

The 70s Devilman anime is just animated Super Sentai. Read the manga. You can also watch the first and second OVAs if you feel like it (Apocalypse of Amon is an 90s gore-edge alternate ending, it's kinda shit).

>story cringe
Don't give about story. Just SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX AAAAAAAAAAUGH

>Miko gets caught and is being tortured
>Akira just calmly takes his time walking up to save her
It was ok.

manga is good albeit a bit silly sometimes
old anime is crap
crybaby is a remake / sequel / tribute thingy
IMO the best way is to read the original manga, then Amon manga, then Crybaby

Devilman Lady manga is good too, if you can stomach all the rape porn.

Your opinion is garbage.

Dude, the original Devilman was 5 volumes with 5 chapters each volume with around 100 pages each chapter. It absolutely is MUCH longer than the 10 episodes long show with around 25 min each.

Crybaby was a synthesis of a ton of adaptations/sequels/spinoffs of Devilman, like Akira's mom getting eaten by the turtle. The sexuality is basically the same as in Devilman Lady only with less rape and more teenage sex antics.

>completely mishandles Ryo as a character.
I don't find it to be mishandled so much as it's not as interesting as the absolutely fucking insane man he was in the original. In Crybaby he's much more composed with bouts of autism coming out every now and then.

I find the horrendous art to be much harder to stomach than any rape scene

And the entire first volume was handled in a single episode.

Yeah, that's my point. No shit they cut out a bunch of stuff.

It's better than what I can draw. The goofy expressions honestly just add to the experience, like the OVAs' dub.
