it's capitalism - anime must make shitload of money, escapist shit is the best for it, in the past expectations for cash wasn't that high, so creators had more creative freedom. It's same with vidya

It's because it has better world-bulding and has a more humanistic sci-fi.

I don't remember it always working but goddammit stuff like Ergo Proxy at least tried, they at least gave a real honest shit. Even if it could feel like it was DEEP and referencing things just for the sake of it.
