Maybe like 10 years ago, but these days popularity through streaming (and merch) is enough for second seasons. Disc sales matter less and less. Not completely irrelevant, but new media is just as if not more important than disc sales
Does anyone even care about stalker threads in this boring season in this boring year? Pretty much everything at the top is a sequel anyway.

I still remember the Franxx vs. VEG Stalker threads. I think that was the last time Zig Forums truly cared after Stalker. Even that year the Stalker threads in other threads were dead.
It's probably less accurate to say disc sales count for more in certain genres and more that they are a better indicator of popularity in stuff with a strong waifu or otherwise otaku pandering focus

What about shows that get second seasons despite poor sales, like Fire Force?
You should be smart enough to figure it out for yourself.
But it's cute girls doing cute things and males are almost non-existent. Sounds like a recipe for success if people here are to be believed.
Fire Force is advertising a manga. As long as the anime does decently enough (and honestly even that isn't as much of a necessary factor anymore) to boost the sales, it can get another season

You thought very wrong. Most of the times I see Japanese talking about anime these days it's about streaming services.
China money, stream numbers from China do matter, but in general good BD sales are more important.
BD is more important than Japanese streaming, but streaming when combining Japanese and international gives a bigger profit.
There are 10+ cute girls shows this season. Yurifags and moe waifufags can't buy them all.
