It's not that Berserk was better -because- it was edgy and gritty. It just so happens that the edgy and gritty period of Berserk was better done, better written, better drawn and paced, more interesting and unique than the current fluffy period. Miura was good at that, he's not very good at what he's doing now. It's not something inherent to the tone or content in themselves.
