The worst of two worlds: a sea of meaningless chuuni nonsense that also constantly breaks its own rules and bends over backwards coming up with excuses to undo the things it's established. Every entry across the franchise has so many lines that leave you wondering if they were completely irrelevant. Also they completely forgot that the masters were just as important as the servants. It did have some solid moments of greatness, but now it only lumbers along in service of pumping out new characters to roll in FGO.

Gotta agree with this. While I do enjoy quite abit the stuff with heroic spirits in the early depitcions of grail wars (F/SN, Zero, HA), it has gotten really tiresome: an endless stream of wank and nonsense mental gymnastics to justify selling you more genderbent famous figures for the gacha.
I find myself infinitely more interested in the setting without the heroic spirits. The world of mages and dead apostles in the modern day that predates the grail wars and can be found in the works of KnK, Tsuki, Mahoyo or the Waver spinoff. It may still bear its own share of inconsistencies, but it has its own identity, and the opportunity of plots that don't revolve around the same fucking ritual.

It should go back to it's original themes of humans and mages trying to obtain miracles of wich they haven't thought the consequences and heroic spirits that prove to them the absurdity of it. That said Kara no Kyokai and MahoYo are still better IMHO.

FSN is amazing. FHA was great for the fanservice even if I didn't enjoy the main story that much. FZ is a great prequel, even if it butchered Saber's ideology and brought tons of annoying shitheads to the fandom who don't get the appeal of the original. Prisma Illya, Carnival Phantasm and El Melloi were nice too. The rest is pure garbage.
My biggest problem with Fate as a franchise is that nearly all of the fandom and all of the newer spinoffs just don't understand the appeal of the original, or don't care about it.
The main appeal of FSN isn't having heroic spirits as characters, it also isn't the battle royal set up, yet thats all what the new shit and large sections of the fandom seem to exclusively focus on.
They see Shirou and all their shounen-rotten brain can see is a weak retarded moron, instead of seeing him for the complex and flawed character he is. They see Saber and either complain about the genderswap or just jack of to her and her dozen clones, when they should be jacking off and appreciating the parralels between Saber's inner conflict and Shirou's.
I also put a large part of the blame on ufotable on this, while they obviously tried to make a faithful FSN adaptation they also kinda framed it as a sequel to Zero and made it stylistically closer to that, instead of letting it being its own thing. They also shot Shirou in the foot by again not including his inner monologues.
Following the Fate franchise over the years has been like seeing your crush getting into an abusive relationship and also falling into a drug addiction. It's heartbreaking.

oh and the OST to DEEN's adapatation is by far the best at capturing FSN's atmosphere and also the best music in general.
The OST to UBW (2014) was forgettable and even though I like Kajiura's work in general her OSTs for Zero and the HF movies didn't hit the mark for me. The VN OST is the second best thing.

I watched Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, Emiya-sanchi no Kyō no Gohan and Fate/Grand Order -絶対魔獣戦線バビロニア-; I'm liking it so far. Some day I will read the visual novel, watch Fate/Zero, the UBW movie and the original anime.
