yes it is because writing re:zero was not a fundamental requirement to be alive for the author, he just decided to make a story about an unlikable faggot having undesirable things happening to him because he's mentally unwell and needs to cope - when he could've made a story about a protagonist that is at all compelling or interesting or is at least in a compelling/interesting situation
absolutely nobody is down on re:zero because subaru isn't a mindless self insert who always gets what he wants, otherwise people wouldn't love zetsubou sensei.

It's also super repetitive (duh), and pacing is ass as well, whether in the small or in the large. It certainly doesn't help that the shows gimmick (rbd looping) is a dumb crutch that backfired almost immediately. There's simply something wrong with your approach to storytelling if the majority of what you tell is undone right away. Cut it all down to the successful loops, and it falls apart completely. Re:zero is by a huge brainlet, for brainlets. Super dumb stuff.

Subaru is just a tool. It's not even a character, it just is because Tappei is not a good writer.
The world he lives in is not organic, everything is forced, and the Re:Zero IFs are proof enough that he's really trying to cover his tracks, because he's incompetent, but also to try and force a narrative for the sake of what he wants to tell, not because he lets the world evolve naturally.
While there were doubts before the actually went on with making the IFs, the spinoffs are simply a the final proof he's been trying really hard to tell the audience

Subaru's character doesn't change much, it just gives insight to how a person like him would actually be, and it's that of an actual idiot, not as an insult, but because I'd have to settle with a "stupid" otherwise. He's not intelligent, Tappei just writes him to succeed because that's the point in the story where he has to.
Again, I don't give two shits that he cries and suffers, but people need to stop talking on how great it is when the writing is horrid.
You want to make him a fucking loser, fine, make him a loser, but don't make him win, because otherwise he's not a loser.

Subaru is a good character. The reason his growth is so satisfying is because he started from such a low place. He overcame impossible situations through sheer willpower.
And yes, Return by Death requires incredible willpower to use while retaining your sanity. It's literally a plot point later that other people couldn't handle what Subaru has been through, to the point that his book of the dead is used as a weapon against someone stealing his body.

Beako is the first close relationship Subaru has had that feels earned and two sided. He was head over heels for Emilia at first sight probably because of Satella brainwashing, Rem was falling all over him too quickly, everyone else is just a friend. Subaru and Beako have become inseparable and the "that person" stuff had nothing to do with it.
