Kawahara does care about AW, the issue is Sunrise.
I am reading the LNs author aftermaths and is pretty clear Kawahara was hype with the AW anime, he loved the idea of Sunrise using his mechanical designs (who wouldn't? Is Sunrise, the house of Gundam).

Reading AW now, at Volume 11.
AW has the issue that the nature of AW means that the protagonists were allowed to lose...initially.
When AW was about PvP fights, it was fine.
The issue is that then they had to deal with the AW lore stuff (Chrome disaster, the enemies) and thus Kawahara had to create the "If you die here, you will be trapped here unless someone does a large scale operation to save you).
Ergo, every fight got kinda strange.
Haru and KYH using their Love DNA Beam to blast Black Vise was epic, but the nature of AW meant that yes, he survived.
That scene means that basically, the villains have countless tries while the heroes rarely can allow themselves to actually beat them.
It becomes very frustrating eventually.
