Just started Fate/Zero after finishing the VN and it is really easy to see how so many people dislike the "sequels". Stay/Night is a lot more tropey, but if you can get over that then the story should have the same dark tone where it matters (speaking about the VN, don't know about how the UBW anime is yet)
