Last volume we continued the Tenrou Island arc. Grimoire Heart lost Kain to Team Natsu, Caprico/Zoldeo to Loke and Meredy to Juvia. FT lost Juvia to Meredy. In the meantime Cana's being kind of an idiot and Gray met up with Ultear.
Mashima pretty much let the whole anime team run wild without telling them anything. Even Akira Ishida was left completely in the dark to Zeref's background and motivations, probably because Mashima had nothing solidified for him yet.

The manga was 32 chapters ahead of the anime by the time OP 10 was released, and it was only 13 chapters since the time skip happened, so the studio probably had time.
