What do you call the "cute girl shows up at the door of a depressed loner" genre, that Welcome to the NHK, Kobayashi's Maidragon or that fox girl show fall into?
What do you call the "cute girl shows up at the door of a depressed loner" genre, that Welcome to the NHK...
I call those a copy-paste slice of life anime. You watch one you've seen them all. The only difference is the theme/setting.
tldr; it's called "uninspired trash"
The execution is always more important than the concept, otherwise you might aswell say Digimon is the same as Sword Art Online because both are isekai - but it helps no one to be reductive.
Anime.
Tail eating comedies
Then why is no one ever eating a tail in them?
Bad example since kobayashi and fox girl are much, much more similar. Digimon and SAO have very little in common, but these slice of life anime are literally all the same shit.
>introduction episodes
>character quirk episodes
>food episode
>beach episode
>Christmas episode and/or shrine episode
>bathtub or pool episode
>unnecessary drama episode
>final episode
>always the same jokes across anime
>always the same character quirks and personalities across anime
Characters across anime like this are pretty much identical and they're only different in visual design (hopefully) and a superficial back story. And considering there's almost no story or challenge the main character has to go through, it's just boring as fuck after you watch more than a handful of anime like this.
Still, I'm curious if the genre has a name, because I am not aware of one.
This is just retarded.
Wish fulfilment
I wish Haruhi or Tohru or some such would show up at MY door...
NHK is a strange example since the cute girl isn't very healthy mentally as well.
bad shows
Mm yes, anime is all the same shit.
>Episode happens
>It's 24mins long
>There's characters
>They fucking speak
>They speak to each other
>They move around (sometimes)
>There's an opening song
>AND and ending song
>Always the same language
>Always the same fucking ratio recently
There is a name for what you describe, it is “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” (or MPDG)
Not just in anime, but in film too. There’s are many examples. I think of these films as 2.5D because they show a 2D-like fantasy of a cute funny girl who cares about you. There are girls like this in real life, but they often have mental disorders. But, I like this character type. And many others do, as it is very popular.
The premise is that an energetic quirky cutie suddenly appears in a depressed lonely guy’s life, and she helps him become happy again.
Never though about that, nice.
Well, there are comedy isekai and there are serious isekai, but they are both isekai.
That's true. I was wondering if Misaki really fits into that manic pixie dream girl archetype since she's actually pretty messed up and onle seemingly cares about the MC because she wants to help the thrashiest low life hikki to boost her self-esteem. But I guess it's still intentionally written as that archetype even if it's a parody or a twisted version so it still counts.
>"cute girl shows up at the door of a depressed loner"
That's a premise, not a genre.
A lot of sub-genres are just a common premise.
Romcom?
Misaki isn't a parody, she is more a "subversion" of that archetype, which is weird because she is also one of the earlier manifestations of it. I guess it is somewhat of an Asuka situation where a primordeal example of an archetype (in this case a "tsundere") is only copied by its succesors on a surface level, without bothering to read into the elaborated character backgrounds that caused her to be the way she is.
I guess it is a sub-genre of romcom, though neither NHK nor Kobayashi are particularly romantic. (In the latter case it is only one-sided, atleast). I think it is more distinct than to just call it a romcom.
Oh right, wrong word... i wanted to say "sitcom".
Even if one doesn't exclude the other.
Yeah I couldn't find the right word. Misaki is what I would expect these manic pixie dream girls to be like if they were real. They all act way to friendly to the MC who usually have little to no redeeming qualities that it makes me think they are either hiding their true intentions or are the type who can get along with with pretty much everyone that they will dump the MC as soon as they lose interest and find a new target.
There were many Tsunderes before Asuka but they were mainly in eroge VNs not television anime
Sure, there were tsunderes before Asuka. But Asuka is one of the most famous early manifestations of the archetype that exploded into the mainstream.
>not depressed loner girl show up at the door of a loner
But Tohru was much more of a depressed loner than Kobayashi.
>Welcome to the NHK
>copy-paste slice of life anime
Abe-com
Slice of Abe
Cute Girls Do Abe Things
SoL best genre, but only when it's done perfectly, i.e. Yotsuba, Kobayashi anime, K-ON anime, Flying Witch
>But Tohru was much more of a depressed loner than Kobayashi.
Eeeeeh. Retroactively, sure.
Not at all.
The original tsunderes were characters like Madoka Ayukawa and Kyoko Otonashi.
Asuka represent the point when the concept of tsundere switch from "difficult girl" or "girl in denial for whatever reason", to yapping annoying histerical nuisance.
Awww, fuck!
I'd never thought of that. Did I really outgrow my MPDG obsession from my late-teens/early-20's just to accidentally get back into it with anime 10 years later?
So Asuka is the pivotal point when the _modern_ tsundere came to be in the mainstream.
