I don’t think I’ve seen something so utterly mediocre become so famous to this scale in years. The last one I can remember is SAO and at least SAO had a solid following pre-anime. Kimetsu would be another forgotten seasonal without UFO.

What attracts people to this franchise? Is it just the animation? Because I gave the anime a chance but dropped it after 9 or 10 episodes as the main characters were completely uninteresting and I only enjoyed one side character. Sure the fight scenes looked nice but it's hard to care about the fate of such boring protagonists.

It’s the most substandard shounen since MHA but because the author churns out a few more sad flashbacks followed by deaths than the usual series the audience think they care about the character. Join that with flashy colours by a great studio and boom. 4 million braindead nips suddenly think they’re reading a phenomenal manga.

I'm just glad this series is so popular that even my favorite unpopular character still has a fuck ton of merch.

Which part of it relies on Japanese culture so much? I have no trouble following shows like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei where half the jokes reference Japanese society.
