That "asspull" is 100x more engaging than all of the redraws combined. I don't care whose fault is- the manga has some good additions for sure, but the webcomic is more engaging and better paced so far. They should have just sucked it up and kept the merc deaths, you can bitch all you want that it hurts your feefees that Mask can be redeemed even after doing that, ignoring the fact that he's self-aware that he's losing his humanity, was in an underground base filled to the brim with monsters which obviously heighten his killing urges, knew nothing about the mercenaries' backgrounds (just like with the aliens), and keeps the exact same mindset in the redraws. I know the argument is that killing them is a lot different than thinking about killing them, but this is a flawed argument because we do not see any hint whatsoever of hesitation, we already know that he wants to enact justice as swiftly as possible, and that he is already a monster. I wouldn't give a typical OPM monster more sympathy just because they didn't kill anyone when it's obvious that they would have absolutely no remorse- what matters for Mask isn't whether or not he actually kills them, but if he can hold on to what little humanity he has left, which is the point of his arc.

It's not like it's impossible for him to feel regret during his own arc when we get to it in the manga, and it doesn't have to be melodramatic either, just a small note he makes to himself when he contemplates letting the crowd die, which prompts him to instead save them. If people can forgive Vegeta even though he destroyed countless planets and never once showed any regret over doing that during the original run, then I don't see how that puts Mask off the table, other than the moralfags who seethed even before the merc deaths because he's a big fat meanie, despite the fact that he had a point about the S-Class not actually trying to be ideal heroes, even if he was unreasonable about preventing the alien attack.

The question you have to ask, is it worth having all those retcons for?
And the answer is: No, it's not. Amai Mask was always a garbage character, and if you want to make his heel turn believable, you'd have to retcon every chapter he's in. As far back as when he killed the caveman. He has been written as an unredeemable villain, until ONE had another brainfart.

At least we got something good out of this shit.
